Ram Nath Kobind, India’s New President from the Lowest Caste

India announced the election of its new president July 20th,Thursday. Kovind secured 65 percent of the votes from an electoral college drawn from more than 4,000 members of 31 legislative assemblies across the country and 776 members of Parliament. He will take office as India’s 14th president next week.

Ram Nath Kovind (born 1 October 1945), 71,He served as the Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017 and served two terms in the upper chamber of India’s Parliament, the Rayja Sabha. As a lawyer, he practiced before the Supreme Court, but his law career is said to have left no distinguished record of cases. He was a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kovind was nominated as a presidential candidate by the ruling NDA coalition and won the 2017 presidential election. He will assume office on 25 July 2017.
