The collaborations between late Sitarist Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass could be regarded as one of the biggest and most influential collaborations between in two different arts and cultural differences, East and West.
Legendary Sitarist Shankar increased Indian classical music popularity in America and Europe since 1956, there through teaching, performance. His influence on the latter helped popularize the use of Indian instruments in pop music throughout the 1960s such as with Beatles. Shankar engaged Western music by writing compositions for sitar and orchestra, and he served as an important contribution to the Indian music society in his home country, he continued to perform until the end of his life.
Philip Glass (1937~) is one of the most representative American composers, especially Glass’s works has been described as minimal music. One of his outstanding works would be considered to collaborate with Indian music and also the philosophy of Tao. His collaboration with Sitarist Ravi Shankar inspired many of Western musical society and contributed to spread Asian music traditions and broadened musical spectrum in the world.
