NYC is a world capital for art, culture, media, and entertainment, and summer presents countless opportunities for residents and visitors to explore outdoor arts programming against the greatest backdrop in the world – New York City. As the city continues to recover from the pandemic, and New Yorkers look for ways to reconnect with their communities, our unparalleled cultural programs will play a critical role. Below are just a few of the (completely FREE) outdoor festivals, concerts, screenings, and exhibitions happening across the five boroughs this summer. Citywide Festivals

Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage

SummerStage will celebrate New York’s revival and the festival’s return to Central Park and 12 local community parks across the city. The season will once again feature new and emerging artists and bands performing genres from around the world.
June 4, 2022 – September 26, 2022

Movies Under The Stars

NYC Parks joins the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment to bring Movies Under The Stars back to parks throughout the five boroughs this summer. More than 150 film screenings will take place through the Summer months, ranging from great new movies to all-time classics, and films perfect for the whole family.
June 22, 2022 – August 26, 2022

Carnegie Hall Citywide

Beginning in July, Carnegie Hall Citywide concerts will bring a diverse lineup of performers and genres to NYC parks venues. From classical quartets to Afro-latin jazz and acapella, NYC residents, visitors, and music lovers in every borough can explore new artists and listen to favorites.

Festival of New York

Throughout the entire summer, Festival of New York will take place citywide, with hundreds of cultural and public organizations collaborating under the singular goal of bringing all New Yorkers together to celebrate NYC’s revival. Thousands of performances, installations, family fairs, community service opportunities, participatory arts and culture experiences, and more will take place during the Festival of New York, Memorial Day through Labor Day.

For even more summer activities across the five boroughs, check out NYC & Company’s Summer Guide. Summer in the City always feels magical. As sun lovers return to beaches and parks in all five boroughs, alfresco diners dominate the sidewalks; meanwhile, outdoor concerts, films, and festivals are in full swing. And of course, there are the major warm-weather attractions, so go spot a snow leopard at the Bronx Zoo, catch a foul ball at Citi Field or take a ride on the wooden tracks of the Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island—still thrilling after all these years.

Silent Disco in the Bronx

Join NYC Parks for a Silent Disco event at St. Mary’s Park. Bring your dancing shoes and headphones and dance to your own favorite songs.

Art at the Sound 2022

Five award-winning Bronx artists are conducting workshops and activities at the waterfront in Soundview Park. Inspired by sounds of nature, write and perform monologues, poetry, and stories, take nature photographs, listen to readings, join their open mic, and create art.

Bronx Night Market

The Bronx Night Market is back at Fordham Plaza! Every month, enjoy your favorite food vendors and shop locally with a rotation of more than two dozen arts and crafts merchants at every event. A roster of pop-up live performances and art installations will also take place on their large stage.

Citywide Dance Party – Wave Hill

As part of the Festival of New York, Wave Hill is bringing the Citywide Dance Party to the Bronx. On the same day, at dozens of locations across all five boroughs, simultaneous dance parties will bring thousands of New Yorkers out for an afternoon of shared joy.

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! is a free, summer-long experience presenting global music icons, legendary jazz artists, indie bands, dance troupes, and more. This year’s lineup includes 30 artists and a film screening, all at the Lena Horne Bandshell at Prospect Park.

Summer of Soul in Downtown Brooklyn

Get down on the last Fridays of every month through September in Downtown Brooklyn with the Summer of Soul Dance Party series. Through September, versatile Black DJs and artists will fill the Ashland Place Plaza with afrofuturistic funk, house music, reggae, and more.

Afrolatino Festival NYC 2022: Affirm, Educate, Celebrate
Celebrate the Afrolatino Festival’s 10th anniversary! Returning for a hybrid, 2 day event for the first time since the pandemic. The festival’s commitment to being a resource and safe gathering point for their community never wavered. June 29 will consist of virtual activities, and June 30 will see the festival’s return to Bed Stuy Restoration Plaza.

Soul Summit Music Festival

The Soul Summit Music Festival in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn celebrates its 20th anniversary this year! The festival showcases a wide variety of talented musicians and artists, including DJs, bands, dance companies, fashion designers, filmmakers, and more.

Manhattan Events

Lincoln Center’s “Summer for the City”

Lincoln Center has curated “Summer for the City,” a performance series with over 300 events that will utilize the full breadth of the Lincoln Center campus, including the city’s largest outdoor dance floor, The Oasis, an Outdoor Cinema at Hearst Plaza, and an underground Speakeasy bar and performance space hosting comedy, poetry, jazz, and more.

Free Shakespeare in the Park

The Public Theater brings back the beloved summer tradition to Central Park with the intriguing political drama RICHARD III, directed by Tony nominee Robert O’Hara and featuring Danai Gurira in the title role. Public Works’ will also bring back a musical adaptation of AS YOU LIKE IT.

Governors Island Rite of Summer Music Festival

The Governors Island Rite of Summer music festival will feature outdoor performances of classical and contemporary music, performed by many of New York’s best-known soloists and ensembles. Audiences will convene on Colonels Row, a large field on Governors Island where listeners are encouraged to picnic and enjoy the outdoors.

Summer Sway

The Shed’s outdoor summer series “Summer Sway” will take over their public plaza on select Friday and Saturday evenings, featuring Dj sets, dance performances, and more.

Queens Events

Queens Rising

The Queens Rising festival celebrates the communities and organizations that make Queens one of the most culturally rich and resilient boroughs. The multi-disciplinary arts celebration will span the month of June and across Queens borders, with arts and cultural institutions in other boroughs showcasing Queens-based artists and groups.

Queens Night Market

The Queens Night Market is a large, family-friendly open-air night market in Queens, featuring 100+ independent and local vendors, along with cultural performances, all celebrating the rich cultural heritage of NYC and Queens. The festivals are held Saturday nights, now till August 20.

2022 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival is an annual sporting and cultural event held on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens to celebrate the fifth moon (or the fifth month) of the lunar calendar. In addition to providing audiences with traditional Chinese foods and performances, the festival hosts over 120 dragon boat teams from across the country.

Queensboro Dance Festival

The Queensboro Dance Festival is an annual summer tour of performances and classes throughout Queens neighborhoods, featuring all Queens-based dance companies of diverse cultures and dance styles. This summer’s outdoor pop-up performances take place at public parks, plazas, bandshells, and other outdoor spaces all throughout Queens.

Staten Island Events

Staten Island Philharmonic Orchestra

The Staten Island Philharmonic Orchestra enriches communities with performances of the best in classical and contemporary music. Enjoy a performance of classical and original pieces by the SI Philharmonic on the Great Lawn in Conference House Park.

Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2022 Summer Recital Series once again brings free outdoor recitals, featuring established artists and young talents of the opera world, to NYC Parks. In Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island, current members from the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program will perform arias and duets, as well as Broadway standards and other classical favorites.

On the Waterfront Friday Films

Join the National Lighthouse Museum on Friday nights throughout the summer for free outdoor film screenings in their promenade. Live music, food, and more fun will also be available throughout the evenings.

Alice Austen House Celebrates Black Music Month

The Alice Austen House will host Staten Island Black Heritage in celebration of Black Music Month, with artists and musicians performing West-African beats, Soul, R&B, Jazz, Reggae, and more.
