Tyva Kyzy, The First Women’s Throat Singing Group in Tuva Republic

Tuva or Tyva, officially the Tyva Republic is a federal subject of Russia (a republic, also defined in the Constitution of the Russian Federation as a state). The Tuvan republic lies at the geographical center of Asia, in southern Siberia. The republic borders the Altai Republic, the Republic of Khakassia, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Irkutsk Oblast, and the Republic of Buryatia in Russia and Mongolia to the south. Its capital is the city of Kyzyl. It has a population of 307,930 (2010 census). From 1921 to 1944, Tuva has independ nation under the name of the People’s Republic of Tannu Tuva.

Tyva Kyzy (“Daughters of Tuva”) is the first and only women’s group in Tuva that performs all styles of Tuvan throat-singing. This from of multiple tones harmonic singing has been practiced mostly by men and prohibited for women. Tyva Kyzy dares to perform publicly this ancient art of singing in their own unique “feminine” style. Tyva Kyzy founded in 1998, is an all-female folk ensemble performing Tuvan throat singing, under the direction of Choduraa Tumat.

Tuvan throat singing, Khoomei, Hooliin Chor (in Mongolian, ‘throat harmony’), or Mongolian throat singing is one particular variant of overtone singing practiced by people in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Tuva and Siberia. It is inscribed in 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, under the name Mongolian art of singing, Khoomei.
